How To Protect Yourself Against A Technology Disaster
A technology disaster can spell the end for many a business, especially those which depend on their information systems to provide products and services directly to the customer. It is therefore essential to have back up systems in place to ensure that any disruption the failure of hardware may cause is reduced to the lowest possible level. There is no doubt that at some point you will have to face an equipment failure of some kind, so being practiced in dealing with the situation is essential.
Data which is used in business varies in importance, but the need to preserve and protect it does not. Even if you are not directly using such data to provide your paid service to the end consumer, you will still need it to satisfy the needs of internal departments, and at the very least it will be needed for regulatory and accounting purposes. Protecting against data loss is something which every business needs to do, yet there are still large numbers of people who just trust their hardware to last for ever.
Failure of a hard drive leading to data loss is still the most common technology emergency. The good news is that the amount of data which can be stored on a single drive has increased dramatically in recent years, and the price of drives has fallen equally dramatically. \on top of that, the CD drive which was once commonplace in computers has now largely been replaced by the combined DVD and CD drive. All of this makes backing up data cheaper and easier than ever before.
Of course, failure of a hard drive is not the only technology emergency you can face. Depending on the type of business you are in, you may have a need to be able to communicate or access information in real time. In this case, failure of any part of your computer equipment will knock out your ability to do business. In this case, there is no real option but to have back up equipment ready to switch on at a moment's notice, even if this back up equipment is not as powerful or well specified as the original equipment.
To make sure you are adequately protected against computer disaster, list each part of your system in turn. Ask yourself what you would do if that part of the system suddenly broke down completely. Unless you are able to answer that question in an instant, and have the back up equipment in place to immediately carry out your answer, then you have something to work on. You simply cannot allow your livelihood, and possible the livelihood of your employees as well, to random chance. Take the time to make sure that your business processes are protected against technology disaster.
